WALLPAPER: Blue Skies (The Leftovers)

Desktop wallpaper featuring Nora & Kevin from The Leftovers

I apologize for basically making two The Leftovers wallpapers in a row. It wasn’t my intention, but I was inspired to make my contribution for the series finale series while the episode was still fresh on my mind. Don’t worry, updates for other fandoms will be coming soon. Once again, this show has been completely snubbed in all major categories with the latest Emmy nominations. I guess I shouldn’t be surprised at this point, but I hoped with it being the final season, things would be different. As I said in my previous post, I could go on and on about how brilliant the series is and how much it means to me, but I’m going to spare you my meandering thoughts about life, love, and the universe. This final scene was an exercise in the beauty and simplicity of the art of storytelling, and it encapsulated all the best that this show has become over 3 seasons.

Next: Arrival, Better Call Saul, Breaking Bad, Bates Motel, others.

I think I’ve now fixed all the broken Photobucket links on my wallpaper pages. The ones on the icon/avatar pages will take a lot longer to straighten out, and I’m not sure it’s worth it at this point. I don’t think anyone visits my blog for the icons anyway. I’ve temporarily removed those pages from the main menu and I’ll put it back up whenever I have time to update them, I suppose.

WALLPAPER: The Bravest Girl on Earth (The Leftovers)

Matt & Nora

It is virtually impossible to put into succinct words what The Leftovers (both the book and the TV series) has meant to me during these past 6 years. But this is my blog and I’m going to try my best. Ever since the first season, Nora and Matt have been my favorite characters. It’s ironic because Matt gets only a passing mention in the book, and at my first reading Nora seemed out-of-place in this story about a biological family. But for TV, Tom Perrotta and Damon Lindelof managed to create another family, even more compelling than the Garveys. (Meanwhile, Tom and Christine, who were the best part of the book for me, didn’t really work on screen.) The “Matt Libs” obituary scene depicted above is probably my sentimental favorite in a series finale that was full of gorgeous and fulfilling scenes. It featured the last interaction between a fascinating sibling relationship that was too often ignored during the course of the show. Not only was it beautifully executed, but I had a strong emotional connection to it as well: My older sister also used to write me custom Mad Libs when we were younger.

This is likely not my last The Leftovers wallpaper. At some point, I’d like to make one with Kevin and Nora for my series finale series. I have to admit I never really shipped those two as a couple during the show’s run. I didn’t dislike them together either, I just never really connected to their romantic relationship. That finale made a believer out of me though. It was the perfect way to end their story, and I loved every minute. There will never be another show quite like this. I’m okay with that. It makes me appreciate how special it was. Also, it would be a damn shame if Carrie Coon never wins an Emmy for this role. Just putting that out there.

Next: Arrival, Better Call Saul, Friday Night Lights, Bates Motel, Breaking Bad… You know, all the stuff that’s been in progress for the past 4 months. (I really need a new computer!)

WALLPAPER: We’ve Barely Caught A Glimpse (The Leftovers)

I know I said something about a new Bates Motel wallpaper, and clearly this is not it. I also know that all my wallpapers for The Leftovers so far are very similar looking. It’s not intentional. I think the show just creates a very specific mood and aesthetic. I also think that I love starry/space backgrounds. This one uses the lyrics from “Overture” which is the first track on Atlas: Darkness. It was supposed to include the entire main cast, but the images from the only photoshoot they’ve done aren’t really conducive to that. The close-ups make it hard to fit all the people in, which is why we’re left with Kevin & Nora. You can also click here for the alternate versions of this wallpaper.

Even after the tweaks I made to my last One Tree Hill wallpaper, I remain unsatisfied with it. So it is possible I’ll keep revisiting that one until I think I’ve gotten it right.

Next: I’m working on new stuff for Alias, The Killing, Bates Motel, and Fringe. But the bigger story is that I’m about 75% done with the new chapter of my AU dystopian Gossip Girl fanfic, “For the Ones We Leave Behind.” I’ve already kept people waiting for too long, so my #1 priority right now is finishing that.

WALLPAPER: Homeward (The Leftovers)

I just finished season 2 of The Leftovers this past week, and man, that’s some amazing TV. I knew as soon as I saw this shot of the bridge in the finale that I had to make some kind of graphic with it. Easily one of the most beautifully shot sequences I’ve seen on TV since Breaking Bad ended. (It’s not really spoiler-y because I don’t think people can tell what’s happening here if they haven’t seen the episode.) Anyway, this is something quick I put together in the middle of all my Sleeping At Last stuff. It was such a great season. The first season was fantastic, but as I mentioned, very much a downer. I think season 2 was much more hopeful and the show’s special brand of humor was used to greater effect. What’s most impressive about the series is how well they immerse you into the world, so much so that you truly believe things you wouldn’t believe in real life are possible. I love that. Also, Matt and Nora are my favorite characters. Those two just can’t catch a break. They’re brother and sister, so I’m actually starting to wonder if that’s the connection to their bad luck. Anyway, I guess we’ll see what they have in store for the final season. I wish it weren’t ending so soon. I was skeptical at first about how they would take this show past the narrative introduced by the novel, but they far exceeded my expectations and made a beautiful season of television.

Next: Well, I’ve made a Jimmy/Kim Sleeping At Last wallpaper for my series, but I’m really not happy with it. Still trying to decide whether I should redo it. It’s linked to the BCS and Special Projects pages if you want to take a look. I’m also in the middle of new wallpapers for Friday Night Lights and The Killing, and I still want to make something for The Catch, though maybe I should wait until I’ve seen the pilot and more photos show? We’ll see.

WALLPAPER: Left Over (The Leftovers)

Desktop wallpaper for The Leftovers

I just finished season 1 of The Leftovers, but I recently watched the opening credits for season 2, and that’s what visually inspired this wallpaper. I think the show is brilliant, but probably one of the only series out there I wouldn’t really recommend binge-watching. Every episode just leaves you in this pit of despair. I’ve never really seen anything quite like it, and I can’t really think of anything to compare it to. There are moments when stylistically it reminds me of Breaking Bad, but even that show was never this emotionally devastating. And it’s been almost five years since I read the book, but I don’t remember even that to be as soul-crushing. I think maybe the TV medium just enhances all that with the way it’s shot, and the rawness of the acting paired with the very effective score. Anyway, I’m really curious to see where they’ve gone in season 2 beyond the novel. I really like how different that opening sequence is, so I expect that there will be a large tonal shift.

Next: One of my favorite wallpapers I’ve ever made is the one that depicts the last 10 minutes of the Six Feet Under series finale, and I want to make a whole series of wallpapers in that vein that pay tribute to other great endings to my favorite TV series. Right now my top priorities are The Killing, Fringe, and Breaking Bad. But we’ll see what happens.
