WALLPAPER: This Magical Thing (This Is Us)

Yes, I’m back! Yes, I’ve made another This Is Us wallpaper! It’s hard to put into words how much I love this show. It’s kind of strange because as you might have noticed, these days I mostly watch either crime dramas or shows with a sci-fi/horror element to them. Sometimes I even find the writing on TIU to be a bit on the saccharine side, but I also find it to be honest and true. From the first moment I saw the trailer, I connected to the essence of it in some way. The chemistry between the five leads is palpable, which is impressive since they haven’t actually shared that much screen time together, but you can feel their family bond reach across the decades and state lines that separate them. In fact, the premise of the show works so well that I’m actually a bit shocked that it’s never really been done before. I’m so happy that the series has been a bonafide hit so far, because it just goes to show that amidst all the reboots, revivals, spin-offs, and adaptions, we got to see something truly original and people responded. Also, I’m glad that for once I don’t have to worry about a new show I love getting cancelled after 10 episodes.

Anyway, I ended up having to erase a bunch of Mandy’s hair in this one. But I’m sure given the amount of times she’s had to alter her hair, that at some point Rebecca will sport some similar style. ๐Ÿ˜‰ Also, I love this quote from Kevin at the end of 1×05! I actually think little Kevin is more sympathetic than 36-year-old Kevin thus far. But we’ll see where they take that character this season.

Next: I’ve finished the last wallpaper (Life Unexpected) in the ATLAS series. I’ll post it tomorrow. I have a lot of other fandoms on my to-do list but there’s no telling when I’ll get to them. I would like to make a new Gilmore Girls wallpaper or two before the revival drops. Other than that: The Affair, Friday Night Lights, Supernatural, One Tree Hill, more This Is Us … all possible.

WALLPAPER: Happy Birthday (This Is Us)

Just four short months ago, I promised myself I would never again watch another new broadcast network TV show live until at least the 2nd season. It kills me that I’m about to break this promise already, but I’m way too excited for This Is Us. Thankfully it’s on NBC, which I trust a bit more not to pull the trigger prematurely. (I’m also looking forward to Pitch, but I will definitely not be watching that until later.) I first got wind of this show at the beginning of the year when production began on the Gilmore Girls revival and Milo couldn’t make it to the table read because he was filming a pilot. At the time, I never expected that to go anywhere, since people film pilots all the time that are never picked up or else turn out to be duds. But since the first trailer came out a few months later, I have been hooked. And the more I find out about the intricacies of the show, the more convinced I am that I’ll love the show. I just hope other people love it too.

I’ve decided to experiment a bit with animated wallpapers, just to mix it up. I started with some simple text animation. Once I figure out birth order, I might animate the heads too. I also made a slightly darker static version.

Next: Life Unexpected, All Is Lost.

WALLPAPER: Atlantic (The Affair)

It’s more than fitting that I was finally able to start on ATLAS: OCEANS this past week, because I also just finished watching s2 of The Affair. For the “Atlantic” wallpaper, there were so many fandom choices! I really wanted to do something for Dexter or Broadchurch as well, but in the end The Affair won out. They really stepped up their game this past year. I thought it was a brilliant season, especially episode 2×09, which details the night of the hurricane. The whole thing felt like a dream. In addition to handling multiple POVs so well (particularly with the addition of Helen’s and Cole’s), this show is groundbreaking with the way it handles huge time jumps mid-season. Somehow the episodes still flow together effortlessly. They also take soapy situations and execute them in a way that feels completely authentic and real. So many shows could learn from this.

I maintain that the main issue of the show is that I don’t believe the relationship between Noah and Alison at all. There’s barely any chemistry, they don’t communicate, they often don’t seem to demonstrate any sort of connection at all despite constant declarations of deep love. Near the end of the season, I began to think that this might actually be intentional? By the last few episodes they were on such different wavelengths that their memories of events had nearly completely diverged. I’m still trying to figure out how they could’ve possibly gotten back together. I guess it was the horror of accidentally killing someone. Anyway, I love Helen! I’m so glad Maura Tierney was Emmy-nominated this year. And Cole was so much more sympathetic in this season. Luisa/Catalina was a fantastic addition.

Next: Life Unexpected (Pacific), Orphan Black, Girl Meets World.

WALLPAPER: Don’t Put Dirt On Our Graves (Nashville)

I’ve been looking for an excuse to make a Nashville cast wallpaper for a while, but then I always feel intimidated when it comes to these large ensemble casts. Sometimes it seems impossible to work in everyone and still make the thing cohesive and attractive. Well anyway, I gave it my best shot. Some of the pics are super old, but what can you do when the whole cast hasn’t done a photo shoot together in 3 years? Hopefully CMT will rectify this immediately. This above is basically a graphic I made for the Nashville 100k posts celebration over at FF, except larger and with different text and more paint splatters. (And we’re back to a 1680×1050 size with this one. I’ve also started tagging all my new posts with the full size dimensions, so there’s no confusion.)

Since my last Nashville wallpaper, a lot has happened. Namely, the show has been resurrected from the dead by CMT. I am far happier about this than I should be, but such is life. The world has the capacity to surprise with every passing second. I don’t have much to say about the upcoming season. I’m trying to stay mostly spoiler-free, but we’ll see how long that lasts. I actually do a very good job of avoiding major spoilers for most of my favorite shows, but when the ships come into play, my anxiety level does tend to rise to great heights.

Next: The Killing, Supernatural, Girl Meets World, Gilmore Girls. But the minute I get my hands on HQ This Is Us photos, all bets are off. I’ll probably drop everything else in favor. ๐Ÿ˜‰

WALLPAPER: Brighter than the Sun (Life Unexpected)

Maybe it’s a little surprising I never made a real Life Unexpected wallpaper before (the only previous one was made as a companion to my woefully unfinished AU fanfic “House of Light”), but maybe it’s not. At the time I think there was a distinct lack of decent images. Anyway, I’m always glad to return to shows that were short-lived but deserving of way more attention than they received. This is one of them. It uses the lyrics to the song “Light” from the (you guessed it!) Atlas: Light album. I have another LUX wallpaper planned for the ATLAS: OCEANS series. I’m sure it will be a while before I get to that.

Next: One Tree Hill or Bates Motel, I imagine. I’m also in the process of making a number of changes around the blog and archive. I’ll make a post soon detailing all of them.

WALLPAPER: These Little Words (Bunheads)

Desktop wallpaper for the TV series Bunheads featuring the main cast

I’ve wanted to make a Bunheads wallpaper since the show first started, but could never quite figure out what I wanted it to look like. So once again, I’m thankful for inspiration from the ATLAS series. This one uses lyrics from the song “You Are Enough.” I miss this show terribly every once in a while. It’s near the top of my list of shows that were cancelled far before its time, and more than deserve a second chance. As excited as I am for the Gilmore Girls revival, I do think that series was played out during its first run. The only appeal now is seeing all the characters reuniting in the future. Bunheads, on the other hand, had so many more stories to tell. Thankfully, even though the ending was rather abrupt, I do think they left us on a fairly satisfying note…with a quirky group dance routine, what else?

Next: Life Unexpected, probably. Maybe Bates Motel.

WALLPAPER: Hi, Monkey (Orphan Black)

Desktop wallpaper featuring Sarah & Kira from Orphan Black

One more week till the new season of Orphan Black! Much like Bates Motel, I thought the show went a bit off the rails in season 2, but season 3 was incredible, particularly the second half. That one scene where Sarah has a vision of herself talking to Beth in the kitchen is simply otherworldly and beautiful. So is this last scene of the season finale where Sarah finally reunites with Kira, and they have this mother-daughter moment in the snow. I thought it would be a really nice scene to use in this wallpaper as we head into the new season. Sarah has never been my favorite clone (that would be Helena) and is not really as intriguing as her sestras, but her relationships with her daughter and with Mrs. S are easily some of the best parts of the show. As for the 4th season, I’m not sure what to expect, but the creators have said that Krystal will have a much bigger role, and that’s pretty much all I need to hear because I love her. I really hope she’ll be inducted into the Clone Club this year.

Next: The usual suspects…Better Call Saul, Bates Motel, Nashville, Fargo.

WALLPAPER: There’s No Catching You (The Catch)

Desktop wallpaper featuring Alice & Benjamin from The Catch

Here’s that wallpaper I kept saying I’d make for The Catch. Let’s be honest, the show is a little disappointing. Though I’m glad they recast Christopher/Benjamin, I don’t think they should’ve gotten rid of Bethany Joy Lenz. I also think the considerable change in tone from the original pilot was a mistake. Both of the leads are better at playing darker roles. And though Mireille & Peter have decent physical chemistry, I’m not sure I believe quite yet that their characters are really in love. Particularly with Peter, there is a strange aloofness about his interpretation of the con-artist, even in scenes when he should be letting his guard down. It’s hard to really care for him so far, and I don’t believe the relationship between him and Margot at all, which is one of the reasons I think keeping Joy might’ve been better. It’s especially difficult because Nate Fisher was so relatable and empathetic. Alice is also not a very compelling character as written, though Mireille is radiant as always. That said, I do think the show will get better as it goes along. We can only hope. Also, I have a feeling that maybe I should finally watch Parenthood. (I’m not a fan of large ensemble casts so I’m a bit nervous about this, but I love Lauren, Peter, and Mae so much. We shall see.)

Next: I’ve really been wanting to make a new Orphan Black wallpaper for some time, so I hope I get to do that before the new season starts. I’m also working on some possible things for Bates Motel, Better Call Saul, Fargo, and Nashville.
