WALLPAPER: The Bravest Girl on Earth (The Leftovers)

Matt & Nora

It is virtually impossible to put into succinct words what The Leftovers (both the book and the TV series) has meant to me during these past 6 years. But this is my blog and I’m going to try my best. Ever since the first season, Nora and Matt have been my favorite characters. It’s ironic because Matt gets only a passing mention in the book, and at my first reading Nora seemed out-of-place in this story about a biological family. But for TV, Tom Perrotta and Damon Lindelof managed to create another family, even more compelling than the Garveys. (Meanwhile, Tom and Christine, who were the best part of the book for me, didn’t really work on screen.) The “Matt Libs” obituary scene depicted above is probably my sentimental favorite in a series finale that was full of gorgeous and fulfilling scenes. It featured the last interaction between a fascinating sibling relationship that was too often ignored during the course of the show. Not only was it beautifully executed, but I had a strong emotional connection to it as well: My older sister also used to write me custom Mad Libs when we were younger.

This is likely not my last The Leftovers wallpaper. At some point, I’d like to make one with Kevin and Nora for my series finale series. I have to admit I never really shipped those two as a couple during the show’s run. I didn’t dislike them together either, I just never really connected to their romantic relationship. That finale made a believer out of me though. It was the perfect way to end their story, and I loved every minute. There will never be another show quite like this. I’m okay with that. It makes me appreciate how special it was. Also, it would be a damn shame if Carrie Coon never wins an Emmy for this role. Just putting that out there.

Next: Arrival, Better Call Saul, Friday Night Lights, Bates Motel, Breaking Bad… You know, all the stuff that’s been in progress for the past 4 months. (I really need a new computer!)

WALLPAPER: Not Today (Melancholia)

Melancholia: Justine

At this point, I’m just going to pretend I didn’t say a bunch of other, unrelated wallpapers were coming. I’ve been meaning to watch Melancholia for a while but kept putting it off because it’s a bit long and I was afraid it would be enormously depressing. But it expired on Netflix earlier this month so I was forced to finally get it over with. It turned out to be one of the best movies I’ve seen so far this year (The Lobster and Paterson are the two others). Not only is it visually stunning, but it also captures the essence of depression in a way that is very honest but quietly subtle. I’m completely floored. As you can see, I’ve used some of the other lines from the song “Cover Me” in this wallpaper because they just fit so well. As I mentioned, I can’t get this song out of my head. I think it’s Depeche Mode’s best since “Precious,” at the very least. Also, in case you haven’t noticed from my long history of arts, I really love me some triangles and circles, and this film delivered them in spades.

Next: Well, I really am working on the various things I mentioned earlier this month, but I don’t blame you if you don’t believe me anymore. I think Bates Motel and Breaking Bad are my priorities right now. I’m also working on something new for Better Call Saul.

WALLPAPER: In the Northern Lights (Gilmore Girls)

Rory & Jess

I know, I know… Once again, I’m not delivering on what I promised in my previous post and have instead made something completely different. In my defense, I’ve been wanting to make a new Literati wallpaper based on the Gilmore Girls revival for some time; I just didn’t know where to begin. I was kind of upset about the lack of screen time between Rory and Jess, so suffice to say the inspiration wasn’t there. But I’ve been listening to the new Depeche Mode album on repeat, and I can’t shake the lyrics from “Cover Me” out of my head. It could probably fit any of my ships that weren’t endgame, but for some reason it made me think of Rory and Jess first. The best thing about it is, while I was making this, I stumbled upon this stock photo of a bride and groom sitting on a little bridge overlooking a lake. Completely by chance! It was fate. (And it already looks like the two of them from behind, so I didn’t even have to make a manip or anything!)

For the record, I still believe they end up together eventually. It’s just too bad we’ll never get to see it.

Next: The same stuff I mentioned last time.

WALLPAPER: Okay Then (Fargo)

Ed & Peggy

I love Fargo. I love Jesse and Kirsten. That’s pretty much the whole story of this wallpaper. I wanted to find some way to work in all 3 seasons without making it super crowded with too many characters, so that’s why the brilliant key art for each season appears in the frames on the wall. Also, this is my favorite pic of them from that photoshoot EW did ahead of the season 2 premiere, but that whole shoot was great. Do they even need engagement photos? I’d be like, “Hey those pics EW took of us (free of charge!) were totally rad. Can’t see us beating those, ’70s fashions and all. Done!”

More importantly, my anticipation for the new season is at an all-time high with all these teasers they’ve been dropping lately! Unfortunately, aside from Ewan McGregor and Carrie Coon, I think this is the weakest cast they’ve assembled of all the seasons so far (to be fair it was a very high bar they set for themselves), but I’m happy to be proven wrong. Last season I had no idea who Bokeem Woodbine was before I watched, and Mike Milligan ended up being my favorite. Anyway, the more I see/hear/read from Noah Hawley, the more I’m convinced he’s some sort of genius, so it’s all moot. I’m sure I’ll love whatever happens regardless. Maybe they’ll even go back into the past for season 4. I would love for basically anyone from season 2 to come back for a cameo.

Next: Marion Crane (Bates Motel), Gus Fring (Breaking Bad/Better Call Saul), final season of The Leftovers, and others.

WALLPAPER: Together (Bates Motel)

Norman & Norma

Sorry I’ve been MIA; I’ve been experiencing some tech issues. Anyway, the final season of Bates Motel is underway, and predictably I’m a mess. I’m not ready for it to end, and yet I’m excited to see how it all concludes. I have complete faith in everyone involved, so I can just sit back and enjoy the ride.

3 of my current favorite shows on TV are ending this year (The Leftovers and Orphan Black are the others) so I plan to make wallpapers for each of them, along the lines of this one. I would also like to make another Bates Motel wallpaper focusing on Marion Crane (aka Rihanna) at some point.

Next: Lemony Snicket’s ASOUE and Friday Night Lights wallpapers are still in progress. Also, The Leftovers, Gilmore Girls, Fargo, etc.

WALLPAPER: Back Together Again (Nashville)

Well, the season is young, but I’ve really been enjoying the revamped Nashville so far. I remember being devastated when the show was cancelled back in April or May or whenever it was, which is odd considering how unhappy I was with the direction of the show at the time (I think there are still like 6 episodes of last season that I just didn’t bother watching and probably never will) but I really loved everything the new showrunners and writers were saying and thought they deserved a chance to turn it around. But I got over my disappointment quickly, as I tend to do. Even before CMT officially saved the series, I’d made peace with the fact that it was never coming back, that we were stuck with this incredibly rushed attempt to tie all the loose ends back together. Or in Juliette’s case, the eternal limbo of a series finale with a cliffhanger ending. So when the good news came, it just felt like we were getting something extra on top of what we’d already had, a revival of sorts except with no time lost in between the two parts. And for the most part, I feel uninvested now. I’m just free to enjoy what seems almost like a completely new show to me, one where characters are behaving how I’ve always thought they would behave. It’s fantastic.

But the important thing is, we have new promo pics! I have been waiting ages for this. There were almost too many. I couldn’t choose. I wanted to make more Nashville wallpapers! The fact is I just don’t have much time anymore, so it probably won’t happen any time soon. This one is a love letter of sorts to everything I love about the show.

Next: Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events, Friday Night Lights. Several other things on my list.

WALLPAPER: Giselle (Better Call Saul)

I don’t think it’s any secret that I didn’t really love any of the female characters on Breaking Bad. It’s the only major criticism (besides that one extremely obvious continuity error with Jane and her popsicle, which bugs me every time I watch that scene) I can find for a show that was perfect in so many ways. That’s why I’m so glad that Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould created Kim Wexler for Better Call Saul, because she is my favorite character on the series. In some part, this wallpaper is about Kim’s relationship to Jimmy. But on a deeper level, it’s just about the inner conflict within Kim herself. We don’t know as much about her childhood as we do Jimmy’s. We only know that she grew up in a small town in the Midwest and pursued law in New Mexico because she didn’t want to end up cashiering at the local Hinky Dinky for the rest of her life. Now she’s grown into a pragmatic person who has a specific future planned out and is trying to get there the right way. And yet, Jimmy brings out the con artist in her. She is intrigued and seduced by that lifestyle, despite her misgivings. During the season, Kim asks Jimmy what kind of lawyer he’s going to be, but she might as well be asking herself. And even though she ultimately decides she doesn’t want to be partners with him, I’m willing to bet we haven’t seen the last of Giselle St. Clair.

Next: I know I said I was working on new wallpapers for Nashville and Lemony Snicket but those didn’t get completed in time. Still coming though.

WALLPAPER: The People We Love (Orphan Black)

Sarah Manning & Beth Childs

I made a new Orphan Black wallpaper before the holidays and keep forgetting to post it. I love this quote from Beth in the dream sequence in s3. It’s one of my favorite scenes from the whole series. I’ve always wanted to make a wallpaper of it, but didn’t really have high quality images, so once I saw this episode still from the pilot of Sarah standing on that train platform, I knew I wanted to take it back to the first-ever scene of the show, one of the best I’ve seen. It hooks you like nothing else, even if you’re a little lost at first, kind of like Sarah. After the past season, I’m can say that Beth is one of my favorite clones. We only get small glimpses of her in the first 3, but I’m so glad they finally rewound the timeline and gave her her due.

I used to make a separate page for a TV show once I hit 5 wallpapers, but now that I’ve split the Other TV page into two sections, that doesn’t seem so necessary. Let the new number be 7!

Next: Honestly there’s no telling anymore. And I’m not sure if I’ll squeeze one in before the new year, but it’s possible. I do really want to make ones for Nashville and Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events with the new promo pics before their respective premieres. So I suppose that’s my first priority.
